“Rublev Reacts to Italian Allegations, Mentioning Đoković: We Were waiting for His Decision’

Andrey Rublev Responds to Lorenzo Sonego’s Criticism, Citing Đoković’s Role in the Decision

Russian tennis star Andrey Rublev addressed the accusations made by Italian player Lorenzo Sonego, who labeled him “disrespectful” following events at the ATP tournament in Metz.

The Backstory

Rublev had initially registered for the Metz tournament as a precaution, uncertain about securing a spot at the ATP Finals. When Novak Đoković decided to withdraw from another tournament, Rublev played only his match against Sonego before packing his bags.

“I understand his emotions; maybe I didn’t handle the situation well,” Rublev told Russian media in Turin. “Everything is relative. I entered this tournament aiming for the finals. When rumors started circulating about Novak’s withdrawal, players like Ruud, De Minaur, and I were waiting for his decision.”

Đoković’s Late Withdrawal Sparked Challenges

Rublev elaborated, “Everyone—players and organizers—knew about the possibility of Novak pulling out. Had he withdrawn earlier, none of us would have participated in this tournament. But Novak announced it on the day of my match. I chose to play because fans had purchased tickets. I wanted to make up for the situation in some way. Honestly, if Sonego were in my position, I believe he would have done the same.”

A Tough Start in Turin

Rublev’s efforts in Turin have been challenging. In his first-round match, he faced Alexander Zverev and lost in straight sets, 2:0. Unfortunately, he also couldn’t secure a win in his second match against Carlos Alcaraz.

Why This Matters

Rublev’s response sheds light on the complexities players face with scheduling and last-minute changes in professional tennis. His acknowledgment of Sonego’s frustration, paired with his explanation of Đoković’s impact, provides valuable context to the Metz incident.

By addressing the controversy, Rublev not only clarifies his stance but also highlights the challenges players navigate in a tightly packed ATP calendar.
